For centuries they stood, like sentinels at the portal of shamanic journeys. Proud and powerful beasts, they mark the departure point between realities. They are beacons guiding those in the know on a journey past obstacles that might waylay a less informed pilgrim.

Gargoyles are the quintessence of the mystic metaphor, archetypes of the dark side of man's personality. They are the deepest thoughts and fears of human kind, manifested as beasts roaming the dark void of our inner sanctum. It is precisely because of this that they are able to guide us, unfortunatly that is the same thing that distresses angelic forces.

Angels have always been the mediators between God and man, at least until these grotesque beasts appeared. These grotesque beasts have usurped the position of the angelic hosts by supposedly protecting and guiding humans. A job the angels would fight for.

For a while it was just distrust and enmity that existed between the two but it was only a matter of time before the animosity turned to violence.

For all the gargoyles' ugliness humans still stand transfixed in their presence. It's the fear/love paradox of being driven to what we fear most.

The original purpose of a gargoyle was to drain water away from the sides of a building. The word comes from the French "gargouille" which means "throat or pipe". This idea originated long ago, as samples of gargoyles have been found from ancient Greece.
